Ten high school sailing teams converged on Sunbury to compete in Richmond Hill High School's home regatta on Nov 5.
The breeze cooperated all day with 10 to 15 knots out of the north and north east.
The horn for the first race of the day went off at 9:45 a.m. as planned and eight races in two divisions, a total of 16 races, took place throughout the day. The last sailor wasn't off the water until 5:30 p.m.
Richmond Hill entered both a JV and varsity team.
"We were very happy to get some of our newer members involved this weekend on the JV team," said coach Carrie Rohde. "The varsity team finished in 2nd place overall, another top finish to add to a very successful season thus far."
A division was sailed by Dana Rohde with Austin Schneider as crew in the first two races and Logan Cordle finishing out the day in the remaining six races. Rohde and her crews finished in 3rd place in A division.
Schneider went on to skipper B division with crew Dylan Vauiso and for the second time this season came out with a 1st-place finish in B division. The team's light weight crews Ashley Kennedy and Riley Derr didn't see any action on the varsity team this weekend because of the heavy winds.
The strong finish by the team helps propel them to the Gold Regatta, which takes place in March and will be hosted at home. The Gold Regatta will determine the seven teams that will go on to compete in the district championship in April in Charleston.
Richmond Hill also entered a JV team, which finished in 8th place. A division on the JV team was skippered by Bobby Jacobs with crews, Erin Rowlings, Kyle Krammer, Kayla Edwards, and veteran crew Ashley Kennedy. B division was skippered by Conner McCarthy with crews Bridgett Gompper, Lizette Arnold, Erin Rowlings and Kyle Krammer.
The team competes again in Charleston this weekend.
