It’s not every day that people get to celebrate 100 years of anything – let alone life. But Magnolia Manor on the Coast resident Phil Harris can say he has.
Born Oct. 12, 1911, Harris celebrated a century of life Thursday with a surprise party at Magnolia Manor in Richmond Hill, when he and nine others had cake and sparkling grape juice in honor of their October birthdays.
Harris said he enjoyed the birthday party that was attended by many other Magnolia Manor residents, adding this was one of four that his daughter had helped put together for him.
“I have a very devoted daughter,” he said Thursday. “She threw me one at 90, at 95 – that one wasn’t a surprise – one at 99, and then this one,” he said, sitting in the recliner of his one-bedroom apartment at the manor. “I told her people are going to get tired of coming to my party.”
One of Harris’ favorite activities is card games. He said he plays Bridge twice a week.
“I win when I get good cards,” he said. “If you don’t get good cards, you don’t play good.”
When he isn’t playing cards, Harris said he enjoys watching the local and national news and occasionally watching “The Price is Right,” adding that was his and his late wife’s favorite show. Other than that, Harris said he doesn’t watch much television.
“I don’t watch TV all the time, but I do play on my computer a little and I enjoy my patio when the weather is like it is now,” he said.
