Hundreds of people gathered Saturday at Fort McAllister Marina to see which soldier from the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Stewart had reeled in the biggest fish at the inaugural Wounded Warriors Fishing Tournament.

The tournament, hosted by the Fort McAlister Sport Fishing Club, allowed wounded soldiers from Fort Stewart to get out on the water for the day with their very own captain and crew.

“We wanted to give back to our wounded warriors because they give a lot for us,” Fort McAllister Sport Fishing Club President Rocky Mallard said.

Mallard, who noted the tournament planning started back in January, said he was pleased with the turnout with about 70 boats on the water with around 80 soldiers participating.

Though they were sunburned and tired as they dragged in their catch to the scales, all the soldiers seemed to have enjoyed themselves.

“It’s something I’ve never done that I’ve always wanted to do,” Sgt. Rob Mitchell said. “Now I want to do it every weekend.”
