Playground equipment, landscaping enhancements and sidewalks were just some of the potential projects the Richmond Hill City Council listed Wednesday for the special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) that will be decided by voters in November.

During the special meeting at City Hall, City Manager Mike Melton gave council members a generic list of projects to work with so a more tailored list could be developed. Roads, streets, bridges, sidewalks and more were included, and Melton said he drafted a list with those projects because they are listed in the Georgia Code as capital improvements.

The projects list will go to a SPLOST committee of concerned citizens working with the Richmond Hill-Bryan County Chamber of Commerce. Melton noted Friday that the committee has “no official ties” with the city but plans to help inform voters of plans for the SPLOST funds if the tax is approved on Election Day.

During Wednesday’s meeting, council member Van Hunter said he thought the council should come up with ideas the community will like, and then “hammer those points” so voters will approve the SPLOST in November elections.

“I think the purpose we’re all gathered here for is we all realize how important it is that this SPLOST passes – because if it doesn’t pass, we’re going to be hurting,” Hunter said.
