Free income tax preparation will be offered on Mondays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Pembroke Public Library for any Bryan county resident who earned less than $39,000 in employment income last year and does not plan to itemize deductions.

This site is an IRS volunteer preparer site, also known as a VITA site, and utilizes local volunteers trained in tax preparation. There are no charges for the service, which operates on a first come, first serve basis.

The tax preparation site is provided by United Way of the Coastal Empire’s Bryan County office and hosted by the Pembroke Public Library and is intended to help raise the amount of Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) distributed in the area.

This credit is available to low-income families in order to help provide them with a needed income boost. Nationally, the IRS distributes an average of $1,700 per year to each of the qualifying 20 million low-income working families. The credit is only available to those who earn income through employment. However, almost 4 million eligible families each year fail to file for their credit, leaving billions of dollars unclaimed.

The goal of providing this free service is to help individuals find out if they qualify for the credit, which in some cases is as large as $4,400, and to eliminate costly fees charged by paid tax preparers which might discourage them from filing. For more information, contact Janice Blunt, Area Director of Bryan County United Way at 756-5333 or dial 2-1-1 from your home phone to access United Way’s Information and Referral Service.
