Nearly 1,200 bicyclists from all over the country made a stop Friday at First Baptist Church in Pembroke as they passed through Bryan County on their way to Hinesville.

The riders are part of the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia, also known as BRAG. It has been around since 1980, when the event began in Savannah and bicyclers rode across the state to Columbus.

This year, the ride began with a warm up event June 4 in Atlanta. Wheels started turning on Sunday and today, the riders will arrive at their destination at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Throughout their journey, rest stops were set up about every 18 miles by the BRAG headquarters, according to cyclist Ken Robinson from Gainesville.

“Whether you need anything or not, most people stop just to refresh and mingle,” Robinson said. “And of course there are food and things you can purchase.”
