The Bryan County High football team concluded two weeks of spring football practice with a Red and White intra-squad game Friday night in front of faithful fans and parents.
The Red team came out ahead on the scoreboard but Redskins coach Mark Wilson said the score didn't matter.
"We wanted to give the guys a chance to get in a game-type setting and award them with some game type experience," he said. "The main objective this spring was to get our young squad a chance to get physical with each other versus installing a whole lot of our playbook material."
The teams were equally divided and both teams had players who showed good technique and determination on both sides of the ball - and the Redskins spent much of the night on the ground.
"We didn't install much of our passing game this spring because we wanted to focus on being physical," Wilson said. "So we did a lot of running the ball so the players could get used to hitting and being hit."
One of the main focuses since Wilson took over the program a year ago was in the weight room, and he said he saw evidence it is working.
"I could see how the weight room work is paying off on several runs by our running backs as they carried tacklers and moved the pile forward with their improved leg strength," Wilson said. "That weight room work is going to continue to pay off for us as we head into the fall."
Wilson seemed pleased with spring practice and what he saw at times in the game and shared his thoughts with his players at the conclusion.
"We were able to put two competitive teams on the field and we had some good plays from both squads. When we put all of us together on one team we will be even better and it should be fun," he told them.
