Anyone who is curious as to where soda cans, water bottles and other recyclable materials go after they’re tossed in the blue recycling bin, just ask the county commissioners.

Bryan County Commission Chairman Jimmy Burnsed, Commissioner Jimmy Henderson and County Administrator Phil Jones on Tuesday toured the Sonoco recycling plant in Savannah, where Sonoco representative Tim Hoover showed them where the recycled materials go.

Jones and Burnsed said there are several naysayers in the community that are skeptical about the recycling program and think the materials are just going into a landfill. Burnsed said he wanted to assure the community that is not happening.

“We did this tour to answer questions and communicate to the public we’re serious to the extent we want to know where (recycling) is going and what it is being used for,” Burnsed said.

Jones and Burnsed said they were more than satisfied with the tour, and feel even more confident to have spoken with Hoover about the operations within the plant.

“What we saw from him was that they were thinking outside the box to see what they could do with the material instead of just compacting it and putting it in(landfill) mountains,” Jones said.

The recycling program in Bryan County started earlier in the year in the Buckhead subdivisions, and after an overwhelmingly positive response, Burnsed said, commissioners decided to implement the program countywide.
