Among the events FMWR is planning for our military community is a trip to the Beach Bum Parade on Tybee Island laster this month.

The Sports Office at Fort Stewart will host a double-elimination softball tournament, open to company-level teams, at the Bennett Sports Complex May 13-14. The tourney is in celebration of Fitness Month.

Registration will be accepted until May 10. Teams can sign up at the Bennett Sports Complex, building 471. The cost is $150 per team. Play will begin at 7 p.m. on May 13.

A team trophy and individual trophies will be presented to members of the first-place team. Team trophies will be awarded to the second and third-place teams.  Competition will be limited to 16 teams.

Hunter Practice Ten Miler

A practice run will be held at 6 a.m. May 14 at Tominac Fitness Center, building 919, for the All-Army 10 Miler Qualifier Race scheduled next month at Fort Stewart.

There’s no charge to take part in the practice race or the Army Ten-Miler Qualifying Race, which will be run at the Donovan track in the Georgia National Guard Training Area at Stewart on June 4.

Family members are not eligible to become a member of the Stewart/Hunter Ten-Miler team, but are welcome to run with their soldiers in the practice run and qualifier.

The 27th annual Army Ten-Miler, with a 30,000-runner field, will be held at 8 a.m. Oct. 9 at the Pentagon.  

 

Youth Sponsorship Kayaking/Aquarium Trip 

Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield youth are invited to take a Youth Sponsorship trip to Skidaway Island for kayaking and a visit to the University of Georgia Marine Education Center and Aquarium on May 14.

The trip is open to CYSS-registered youth in grades 4-12.  The kayaking is open to those in grades 7-12 and the fee is $15, payable upon registration. All others will visit the aquarium and should bring $2 for the entrance fee. Registration ends May 12.

To register, go on-line to the CYSS Web page or in person to the CYSS registration offices at Stewart or Hunter. No refunds will be granted after May 12. In addition, a $5 fee will be applied to any cancellations after May 12 or no-shows.

Body Building and Ms. Figure Contest at Stewart

A Body Building and Ms. Figure Contest will be held at Woodruff Theatre on May 14 to reward and recognize the hard work and rigorous training that Stewart/Hunter soldiers, families and civilians have invested in the sport and art form of body building.

Each contestant will be judged on muscularity, symmetry, free posing without music, and free posing with music. First- to third-place awards/trophies will be offered for each category.

Free T-shirts will be given to all participants.

The contest is open to military ID card holders ages 17 and older, and non-military civilians. Late registration, from April 30 until the day of the event, will be $35.  

Weigh-in will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the theater, building 410. Pre-judging will take place at 11 a.m. The competition will begin at 7 p.m.

The cost to spectators will be $3 during pre-judging and $5 for the competition.

Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade Trip

Register by May 17 for a Leisure Travel trip to Tybee Island to enjoy the annual Beach Bum Parade at 4:30 p.m. May 20.

It’s a parade like no other. Unlike most parades, the floats, trailers or boats are filled with water-throwing paraphernalia. Spectators line up along the Butler Avenue parade route armed with buckets, squirt guns and hoses. It’s an all-out water war for fun-loving beach bums of all ages. Be prepared to get wet.

The cost is $25 per person for transportation.

Armed Forces Day Car Show at Stewart

Soldiers and their families will have a chance to “show pride for their ride” and maybe win a prize during the BOSS Armed Forces Day Car Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 21 at the parking lot on-post (off  East Bultman Avenue) adjacent to the Fort Stewart Education Center

Judging will be in the categories of best (car/bike) in show; best import; best SUV/truck; best classic; biggest rim; most chrome and best sound. Admission to watch the show is $2 per person. There is no charge for children ages 10 and younger.

Entry fees are $25 per car show entry; $10 per car for clubs entering five cars or more; $10 for the sound competition and $30 for the show and sound combination competition.

Concessions and vendors will be available.

Armed Forces Kid’s Day Runs

Children ages 5-13 from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield will join military-connected children around the world in America’s Armed Forces Kids Day Runs on May 21.

At Stewart, the event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Jordan Youth Gym. At Hunter, the event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Steven Douglas and North Perimeter Road. 

The events provide an opportunity for youth to participate in America’s Kids Run in conjunction with Armed Forces Day and as part of the WECAN (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition) program to combat childhood obesity.

Each child will receive a T-shirt upon completion of his/her run. The younger kids will run half a mile, the 7- and 8-year-olds 1 mile, and the older kids 2 miles. 

Activities and games will begin when the runs are completed.

As part of Armed Forces Day activities in May each year, military dependants in the United States, Bahrain, Greece, Puerto Rico, Germany, Japan, Iceland, England, and Italy participate in America's Kids Run.

Summer Reading Program Registration

Children up to age 12 are invited to register from 4-5 p.m. May 25 for the Midsummer Knight’s Read Summer Reading Program at the George P. Hays Library, building 411.

Children receive a special book bag, reading list, and related goodies.

A “Wand of Dreams” presentation by Sean Driscoll will launch the summer reading program from 3-4 p.m. and 4-5 p.m. on June 1 at the Library.

Offshore Soldier Fishing Event Sign-up

Registration will continue through May 25 for free participation in the Offshore Outlaw Fishing Club’s June fishing tournament.

Soldiers must pre-register at the Fort Stewart or Hunter Leisure Travel Office. The number of spaces available is limited. Participants must have a Georgia fishing license, available for purchase at http://www.dnr.state.ga.us.

The club, as it did in 2009, has extended an invitation to Active Duty, National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers to take part in the tournament.

A mandatory captains’ meeting and Lowcountry boil will be held June 3 to finalize details for the June 4 tourney. Fishing club captains will take Soldiers out June 4 and provide all fishing equipment/tackle and bait needed.

The club is based out of the Fort McAllister Marina in Richmond Hill.

Teen High Adventure Camp Sign-up

Registration will close June 2 for the action-filled Teen High Adventure Camp, scheduled June 12-17 in the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina.

The trip is sponsored by the Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield Child, Youth and School Services and is open to CYSS-registered youth 12 -18 years of age.

Youth can learn lifetime outdoor adventure skills through activities such as hiking on the Appalachian Trail, climbing what is described as one of the best ropes challenge courses in the Southeast, tubing in the Smoky Mountains and white water rafting down the Nantahala River. Meals, transportation and cabin accommodations are included.

Youth Sponsorship Gator Galore & Asian Festival Sign-up Deadline

Register by June 2 for the Youth Sponsorship Gator Galore & Asian Festival trip to the Savannah Wildlife Refuge and the Savannah Civic Center on June 4. There is no charge for the trip.

The trip is open to CYSS-registered youth in grades 4-12. Although the trip is free, there is a $5 fee for any cancellations after June 2 or no-shows.

During the 4 mile loop through the wildlife refuge, participants will likely see gators and other wildlife indigenous to the Southeast coastal region. From the wildlife refuge, the group will go to the Savannah Civic Center for the Savannah Asian Festival.

The Asian festival will feature live stage performances, martial arts demonstrations, authentic cuisine, cultural displays, arts and crafts and more. Youth can bring a lunch or buy lunch at the festival.

Baby Loves Disco Tickets

Free tickets for Baby Loves Disco, whose Lemonade Tour music and fun had Club Stewart rocking for three hours last November, are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Stewart and Hunter Leisure Travel Offices.

Distribution of tickets, which are needed for admission to the event, began on Monday, May 2.    

The dance party for kids ages four months to 7 years will be held in the Club Stewart Ballroom from 5 to 8 p.m. on May 31. Children will dance to groovy 70’s and 80’s disco music and have a ball with games and activities such as face-painting, sock puppets, an art wall and more.

At Stewart, the Leisure Travel office is at building 419 in the PX Furniture Mall complex. At Hunter, the office is in building 1286.

2011-2012 FS DoDEA School Day Schedule Changes

An important parent letter has been sent to all currently enrolled Fort Stewart DoDEA School Families regarding the upcoming 2011-2012 school year.

 In an effort to provide teachers and staff a consistent time for professional development and collaboration, a change to the student schedule for the upcoming school year has been proposed.  Due to the schedule change, students will be dismissed at1:30 p.m. each Thursday.
