A celebration is planned to commemorate the Springfield Plantation’s 256th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War on Saturday, April 30. Plantation owners Laura and Meredith Devendorf will lead tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. over the grounds of the Springfield and Palmyra plantations, which are in Midway.
From 1-3 p.m., “Crossroads of Conflict” authors Barry L. Brown Gordon R. Elwell will sign copies of their book, an illustrated travel guide to Georgia’s Civil War sites published by the Georgia Civil War Commission, the Georgia Humanities Council and the UGA Press.
Brown is a heritage tourism specialist for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, and Elwell is a former program coordinator for the Georgia Civil War Commission, a retired command historian for the Georgia Army National Guard and current historian for the Georgia State Defense Force.
Copies of “Crossroads of Conflict” will be available for purchase. Meredith Devendorf also will sign copies of her book, “Images of America: Liberty County.”
The event is free and refreshments will be served from noon-3 p.m.
