The Bryan County Redskins Football team set out to Long County for their non-region matchup against the newly rebuilt Long County Blue Tide. And with Long County’s struggles last year, the Redskins were unaware of the battle they would soon face.
Wiith a large home town crowd cheering them on, the Blue Tide took an early lead in the first quarter on a short 1 yard run as sophomore quarterback Justin Boyd handed off to tailback Prince Moody, then held off Bryan County 41-40 in a wild back-and-forth contest.
The Blue Tide maintained their lead throughout the first half of the game. The Redskins could never gain any momentum on the field in the first two quarters of the game despite the efforts of Ivey Mutcherson, who ran for 184 of the team total 239 yards in the first half. And though halftime found the Skins down 28-14, they didn’t give up.
Bryan County crossed into the end zone four times in the second half of the game, the last score set up when, on fourth down with 4 yards to go, senior quarterback D.J. McElroy dropped back for a pass with 15 seconds left on the clock.
McElroy found the opening in the Long County defensive line that he was looking for and charged out of bounds at the 10 yard line with only one second left on the clock. That gave the Skins a first down and a chance at scoring.
McElroy handed off to Deandra Walker, who barreled his way through an opening in the Tide defensive line into the end zone. Walker’s touchdown cut Long County’s lead to 41-40 with no time showing on the clock.
As Redskins fans held their breath, hoping for the tie if not the win, the Redskin offense set up for the 2 point conversion. Earlier in the game, several attempts at kicking for the extra point had proven unsuccessful for the Skins.
McElroy handed the ball to Mutcherson, who slammed into the wall of Long County defenders. Both sides of the field and stands awaited the officials call, but Bryan County came out unsuccessful when Mutcherson’s knee was ruled to touch the ground before he crossed the goal line.As the pile of red and blue players was dismantled and cleared, Bryan County argued Mutcherson had scored, but the umpires stuck with their call.
The Redskins rushed for a total of 449 yards against the 348 passing and rushing yards of the Tide. Long County outnumbered the Skins in fumbles losing 3 of their 5 fumbles while the Skins had only one turnover on two fumbles.
The loss leaves the Redskins with an overall 0-2 record. The face South Effingham in another non-region matchup in Pembroke on Friday, Sept. 14 before taking a break in their schedule. They then play host to Savannah Country Day at home on Sept. 28.
