Starting on Saturdays in April, the parking lot on Bacon Street in Pembroke will be filled with vendors selling local produce, products and crafts.
A farmers market, called the Whistlestop Market, will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday from April 2 to Nov. 27 in the parking lot on Bacon Street in Pembroke. The Pembroke City Council approved the market during its council meeting on Monday, Jan. 10.
The market was the brain child of Pembroke’s Downtown Development Authority. Members of the council wanted to start one to help promote buying and eating local products and to draw people to downtown Pembroke, said Tiffany Walraven, a council member and chairperson of the authority.
“There’s a lot of different things in the local area….I think will be good for the farmers market,” she said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the city of Pembroke.”
Members of the development authority were trying think of a regular event to draw people into Pembroke, said Sharroll Fanslau, a member of the Downtown Development Authority. There are farmers and crafty people in the community, and members thought a farmer’s market would be a great way to promote the city.
“We’re kind of a little hidden gem in North Bryan County,” Fanslau said.
