The Richmond Hill High School wrestling team will try to pin down a trip to the state team tournament today when they take part in qualifying matches at Effingham County High School. The Wildcats need to finish second to advance.
Richmond Hill is 11-2 heading into the tournament after splitting in matches against Screven County and South Effingham.
The Wildcat "Matmen" dominated the Gamecocks 57-12 and fell 46-32 to the Mustangs.  Richmond Hill was without team captain Michael Early, but didn't lose a match against Region 2-AA's Screven County in the opener.
The Gamecock's only points came from forfeits at the 103 and 171 pound weight classes, the latter where sophomore Christopher Ahmay was suffering from the flu.
Among the highlights for RHHS were heavyweight Michael Ahmay, who opened the tri-meet with an exclamation point by pinning his opponent in 41 seconds.
Freshman Zach Bringer earned a fall at 125 in 1:14, improving his record to 14-5 on the year. That was followed by falls from Kyle Pierce and Brandon Mason, wrestling at 140 and 152 for the Wildcats respectively.
Ian Phifer won in the 130 class 17-6, Zach Perez won at 135 by a 7-3 score and 145-pounder Jameson Cunningham  won 23-10. Tyrelle Morrise beat his opponent at 160 by a score of 12-3.
The match was capped by Cooper Russell earning a fall in 47 seconds.
The momentum seemed to fuel the Wildcats early in the second match against Region 2A-AAAA foe South Effingham. Ahmay pinned his opponent in the heavyweight class in 35 seconds to start things off. Ethan Wampler followed that with a win by fall at 112,
